Coyote Gloves

2020

installation with antique kid gloves, miniature speaker, silk thread 30x12x18 inches

In Coyote Gloves I explore the thin line between human and beast. Coyote howls, recorded from my studio window, resonate from a miniature speaker lodged in one of the gloves. Not allowed to show her own skin, could a woman only inhabit the skin of another in public? The coyote pups' howls were filled with longing as they learned how to create the right sounds. These howls of longing seemed particularly poignant as I thought about women who, for social convention, were encased in unfamiliar skin.
