Photographing the Other World
2017
Photography can capture ephemeral apparitions the unaided eye cannot see. In this series, I explore imaginary ghostly worlds sculpted for and by the camera. Costume abstracts and extends the body, and sculptural objects become mysterious environments. These photographs explore themes of intimacy, transformation, and otherworldliness. In this series, wax - historically used to represent the dead - is transmuted into a ghostly garden or a wave arrested in motion. Infrared photography and long shutter speeds find hidden light and motion. A hand-embroidered veil further questions layers of absence and presence. Projected light takes ephemeral form.
